2018 Georgia Afterschool & Youth Development Awards

The 2018 Georgia Afterschool & Youth Development Conference will host the inaugural Georgia Afterschool & Youth Development Awards. The Awards will honor outstanding professionals, programs, and youth and recognize honorees for their efforts and excellence in the afterschool and youth development field.

Nominations will be accepted through April 1, 2018 for four awards:

Program Awards

Excellence Award – Recognizing outstanding afterschool or youth development programs

ASYD Innovator Award – Recognizing afterschool or youth development programs that are role models in the use of the ASYD Quality Standards

Individual Awards

Leadership Award – Recognizing outstanding afterschool or youth development professionals

Rising Stars Award – Recognizing outstanding youth (ages 11 to 21) who have been active leaders in their afterschool or youth development programs

All nominations will be submitted via the form below and will be distributed to the judges as printed documents. The response to each question must be no longer than 500 words. It should include details about specific activities, accomplishments, highlights and honors. Please avoid including URLs/website links in your responses. Photos, attachments and supporting documentation will not be accepted during the nomination phase. Anyone may nominate a program or individual, self-nominations are accepted.

Finalists will be selected by an independent panel of judges. All nominated programs and individuals will be notified of their status by May 1, 2018. Finalists will have until August 1, 2018 to complete the appropriate Award Application, which will include opportunities for submitting photos, videos, letters of support, evaluation data and additional information. Final winners and all honorees will be announced on September 28, 2018, the final day of the 2018 Georgia Afterschool & Youth Development Conference in Columbus, GA.

By submitting a nomination, participating individuals grant the Georgia Afterschool & Youth Development initiative permission use the any of the submitted materials, not protected by copyright, in advertisements and/or promotions without compensation or notification. Such advertisements or promotions may include internet/social media announcements of 2018 Georgia Afterschool & Youth Development Awards or Conference, as well as print materials distributed at or in promotion of the events.

EXCELLENCE AWARD

An outstanding afterschool or youth development program that meets the highest standards of quality in the field and demonstrates capacity to meet the needs of children, youth and families in their community may be nominated for this award.

Afterschool or youth development organizations, departments and individual program sites which have operated for at least two years are eligible for the Excellence Award. The program can be public, private, faith-based, based in a school, neighborhood location, community center, library, museum, institution of higher learning, or military base. Anyone, including program staff, may nominate a program.

The online nomination form will include five equally weighted writing prompts. Nominator must provide specific examples of how the nominee:

  1. utilizes intentional programming and a variety of activities that engage children and youth to develop strong life skills;
  2. utilizes intentional programming and a variety of activities that develop a child socially, emotionally, physically and academically;
  3. builds links to and strong relationships with families;
  4. partners with schools, other afterschool or youth development and/or community-based organizations; and
  5. promotes the professional development of its staff.

ASYD INNOVATOR AWARD

An outstanding afterschool or youth development program that meets the highest standards of quality in the field and demonstrates an above and beyond approach to using the Georgia Afterschool & Youth Development Quality Standards in all aspects of their program.

Afterschool or youth development organizations, departments and individual program sites which have operated for at least two years and have conducted at least one ASYD Quality Standards Self-Assessment are eligible for the ASYD Innovator Award. The program can be public, private, faith-based, based in a school, neighborhood location, community center, library, museum, institution of higher learning, or military base.

The online nomination form will include five equally weighted writing prompts. Nominator must provide specific examples of how the nominee:

  1. engages a variety of stakeholders in the self-assessment process
  2. conducts the self-assessment with integrity and with the goal of program improvement
  3. utilizes self-assessment results to drive programmatic change
  4. infuses the nine Quality Elements into daily program practice
  5. plans to utilize the Quality Standards and Self-Assessment in the coming year(s)

LEADERSHIP AWARD

An outstanding afterschool or youth development professional that demonstrates an understanding of the critical value of high-quality afterschool and youth development programs and exemplifies excellence in meeting the highest standards of quality and meeting the needs of children, youth and families in their community may be nominated for this award.

Afterschool and youth development professionals including executive directors, site directors, supervisors, coordinators and others who have at least five years of experience in the afterschool and youth development field are eligible for the Leadership Award. The individuals nominated should have contributed significantly to their program, their community and the field of afterschool and youth development.

The online nomination form will include five writing prompts. Nominator must provide specific examples of how the nominee:

  1. demonstrates leadership in one or more afterschool and youth development programs and communities
  2. demonstrates commitment to quality in afterschool and youth development programs
  3. contributes to local, regional and/or statewide activities to improve the quality of afterschool and youth development programs
  4. contributes to local, regional and/or statewide activities to raise the visibility and understanding of the need for and benefits of quality afterschool and youth development programs
  5. has made a positive impact on the afterschool and youth development field and the children, youth and families s/he serves

RISING STARS AWARD

An outstanding afterschool or youth development program participant that exemplifies excellence in leadership and program and community engagement may be nominated for this award.

Youth ages 11 to 21 who have some connection as a program participant to a Georgia afterschool or youth development program are eligible for the Rising Stars Award. The individuals nominated should have contributed significantly to their program and their community and demonstrated positive leadership and decision making skills.

The online nomination form will include five equally weighted writing prompts. Nominator must provide specific examples of how the nominee:

  1. demonstrates leadership in one or more afterschool and youth development programs
  2. demonstrates leadership in his/her community
  3. demonstrates good decision making, healthy choices and communication skills
  4. contributes to local, regional and/or statewide activities related to afterschool and youth development programs
  5. has made a positive impact on the afterschool and youth development field and the children, youth and families s/he engages with
